Plastics and packaging targeted by construction sector

19 February 2019

Improving recycling levels is one of the aims of a new initiative from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) as it continues its drive to improve the image of UK construction.

It now plans to raise awareness and encourage best practice in the reduction, reuse and recycling of plastics and packaging.

This will be delivered as part of its 'Spotlight on . . . plastics and packaging', which has been created followed a survey of over 900 people in the UK and Irish construction sectors.

Having revealed that just 44% of those surveyed know the rules for recycling different plastic and packaging materials, the study has resulted in the forming of a plastics and packaging working group by the CCS.

The group has been tasked with creating guidelines to be used to assist in the monitoring, management and reduction of plastic and packaging waste.

CCS chief executive Edward Hardy said: "As construction is the second largest consumer of plastic in the UK, our industry has one of the greatest responsibilities to society and to the environment to ensure that we are working tirelessly to improve our standards in minimising waste from plastics."

It is the latest development in raising awareness and improving industry practice, with the 'reduce, reuse and recycle' mantra becoming increasingly prominent among all areas of the FM industry.
