HSE releases overview of GB work-related ill health

05 November 2018

Statistics for work-related ill health for Great Britain have been published online by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Covering 2017/18, the annual survey shows that 1.4m workers were suffering from work-related ill health.

There had been 30.7m working days lost to a combination of work-related ill health and injuries in the workplace.

The study also showed that 2,595 fatal cases of mesothelioma had been recorded, attributed to past exposure to asbestos.

A total of 144 people had been killed at work, said the HSE, and 555,000 had received injuries in the workplace.

Among those suffering injuries at work were 71,062 reporting incidents under the RIDDOR regulations.

Overall cost of lost time at work due to both injuries and work-related ill-health amounted to £15bn "from current working conditions", according to the Labour Force Survey.

Further information on the HSE report can be accessed here.

The announcement was made prior to this year's International Stress Awareness Week, which starts today and more details are available here.
