NET2GRID Wins £10,000 in ENGIE’s Innovation ‘Big Pitch’

30 May 2018

ENGIE has chosen NET2GRID as the winner of the 2018 Big Pitch competition, with the company receiving a £10,000 prize.

The award, made on Wednesday 23rd May at the iCentrum Innovation Birmingham Campus, was the culmination of ENGIE UK’s Innovation Showcase event.

The event is part of ENGIE’s annual Innovation Week programme, a global initiative by the ENGIE Group involving 130-plus activities around the world.

The winning business was one of the top five companies who made it through to the final of the Big Pitch Competition, which this year focused on a ‘Call for Projects for the SMART Home’.

NET2GRID’s pitch focused on software that provides an intelligent, automated and scalable mechanism to disaggregate consumption measurements and identify electrical appliances and their usage within an installation.

In addition to being awarded £10,000, NET2GRID will now have the opportunity to develop a proof of concept with ENGIE’s UK business, and work together to find the most productive application of their technology.

Berend Olde Rikkert from NET2GRID said: “We had great conversations with many people from the different parts of the ENGIE business. It’s great that we’ve won, and I look forward to the real opportunity we now have to connect and work together with ENGIE.”

Wilfrid Petrie, ENGIE CEO in the UK and Ireland, said: “As a Group we have always been pioneers and innovation is a cornerstone of our business.

"We must be bold to lead the way in embracing new technologies that will benefit the individuals, businesses and communities we serve. Therefore, collaborations between our own teams with start-ups, SMEs like NET2GRID are becoming increasingly important.

“Once again, the UK Big Pitch competition has brought out the best in innovation. The winning pitch, NET2GRID, offered some exceptional approaches that could have a transformative impact in how we manage energy consumption in our homes.

"We congratulate Berend and the NET2GRID team for a truly innovative approach and we look forward to ENGIE and NET2GRID continuing towards a successful business future.”

During the ENGIE UK Innovation Showcase, there was an Innovation Marketplace with 11 ENGIE and SMART Home start-up exhibits and Workshops on key themes such as Low Carbon Gas and Connected Living.

The event was supported by keynote speeches from Professor Martin Freer (University of Birmingham), and Alan Carr (Sustainability West Midlands & Innovation Alliance West Midlands).

Through the Big Pitch ENGIE was seeking to discover the next big idea in SMART Home technology.
