Schwank GHPs create ideal temperatures for pharmaceutical products

Schwank Gas-engine Heap Pumps (GHPs) are providing excellent solutions for the demands of temperature sensitive products in storage.

This includes at a recent installation carried out for the Polish logistics centre of a leading pharmaceuticals distributor.

This is ensuring that year-round optimum storage conditions for the temperature sensitive products are maintained while also creating comfortable temperatures for the workforce.

For this customer, it was essential that products were stored at carefully controlled temperature and humidity levels.

This meant a temperature range of 18oC to 25oC and a relative humidity of less than 60% had to be achieved in all seasons and weather conditions.

A Schwank GHP was added to an existing system of Schwank gas-fired infrared heaters.

The GHP acts as the main heating and cooling system and is used in conjunction with intelligent temperature control.

For instance, when the outside temperature has fallen to -3oC, the gas-fired heating system will be activated while the GHP will act as a secondary system.

The new configuration meets the rigorous pharma product storage requirements efficiently and cost effectively. Benefits of Schwank GHPs include:
o Excellent energy efficiency ratings – up to 150% for heating and up to 200% for cooling
o They exceed environmental regulations criteria, being low on CO2 emissions and below the required standard for NOx standards
o Low energy costs, gas being competitively priced when compared with other energy sources
o Ambient heat is captured from the air and heat from the GHP engine is recovered and recycled, with hot water produced as part of the heating process
o There is the option for a water heat exchanger to connect to domestic hot water systems, DX coil or chilled water for indoor heat exchange
o Temperature can be regulated into zones, so that one area of a building may be heated while another is kept cool (e.g. an office area can be kept warm while an adjoining warehouse maintains a low temperature)
o Direct use of gas by GHPs as a primary energy source saves the generation and distribution losses incurred with electric heat pumps.

Steve Sherman, MD of Schwank UK, explained that their United Kingdom operation is supplying GHPs in partnership with the specialist distributor Oceanair.
