Advice issued following global cyber attack

16 May 2017

Tips to help businesses protect themselves from external cyber attacks have been issued by the Forum of Private Business.

These have been issued in the wake of the global ransomware attack at the end of last week, with the NHS the most high profile victim.

Instances of cyber attack are taking a much higher profile within the FM sector, particularly for those facilities with mission-critical systems and data centres potentially at risk.

IT experts have warned that there it is likely that more cases of ransomware attacks will be carried out in the near future.

The most recent example affected businesses and individuals in more than 150 countries.

The tips issued by The Forum are as follows:
1) Back up all systems.
2) Ensure all devices are regularly updated with updates and patches applied.
3) Install simple security software on devices, a lot of it is free.
4) Regularly change passwords.
5) Run updates using firewalls and anti-virus software.
6) Be wary when reading emails.

Forum of Private Business managing director Ian Cass said: "This attack is a sharp reminder that no matter the size or type of business you run, you should take some simple precautions.

"The Forum have been promoting cyber security for three years now and there are some simple steps you can take."

He further stated that his organisation offers free cyber protection for one month for members.
