Whitfield Clinic celebrates first hospital ISO 5001 certification

10 October 2016

Successful accreditation for ISO5001 energy management has been celebrated by Whitfield Clinic in Waterford City, Ireland.

It is the first hospital within the UK and Ireland to gain the recognition and expects to save an additional 220 tonnes of CO2 per annum as a result.

Additional energy and cost savings are also expected and will no doubt attract the attention of a number of healthcare establishments, especially those in the cash-strapped NHS.

Whitfield Clinic has worked with resource management company Veolia since 2006 on a range of energy and facilities services, including the introduction of combined heat and power (CHP) technology.

The introduction of a high efficiency chilled water system is also credited with reducing air conditioning energy consumption by 33%.

Verification of the clinic's ISO5001 accreditation resulted from a two-stage audit of its energy management systems and future targets.

Whitfield Clinic chief executive officer David Beirne created the achievement as marking "a real step forward in our sustainability on site".

It will also be used to promote increased energy awareness in all those on site, improving its image and redirecting savings "to improve patient care".
