Launch of the UK’s first truly ‘circular’ office chair

13 July 2016

A leading furniture manufacturer and sustainable workplace solutions provider have teamed up to produce the UK’s first truly ‘circular’ office chair.

Launching today, Wednesday 13th July, the G64R sees Orangebox’s precision engineered G64 office chair remanufactured to as good as new condition at Premier Sustain’s award-winning Renew Centre.

This exciting new development not only extends the life of the chairs and supports the circular economy but also makes one of the UK’s most successful office chairs available at a very attractive price point.

The Orangebox Premier collaboration enables end-of-life G64 chairs that are near or passed their warranty to be returned to Orangebox where they are collected by Premier for remanufacturing at its state-of-the-art facility.

The Renew Centre is the UK’s only independent, commercial facility solely dedicated to remanufacturing, refurbishing and repairing desks, chairs and other office furniture.

Originally opened in 2011, the facility has over 5,000 square feet of remanufacturing space housing high specification machinery and a specialist team.

The Renew Centre was recognised earlier this year with the UK’s highest accolade for business success, a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.

All remanufactured G64R office chairs come with a full manufacturer approved warranty comparable to that of a new G64 and are available to purchase through Premier Sustain.

Designed to comply with British Standard 8887-220 (design for manufacture, assembly, disassembly and end-of-life processing), the chairs are crucially Orangebox approved and use the manufacturer’s replacement parts.

The new G64R also comes with an impressive range of environmental benefits. Each remanufactured chair saves 32kg of CO2 (e), a 60% reduction in total compared to a new G64.

98% of parts are recyclable with removed components either kept for reuse or returned to Orangebox’s locally based suppliers for reprocessing into new parts.

And water footprint analysis has demonstrated a G64R saves 75% of water consumption compared to new.

Phil Oram, Director, Premier Sustain says: “Premier is the only company in the UK with the capacity to take these popular, stylish chairs and economically remanufacture them in quantity returning them to as good as new condition.

"We are very pleased to be announcing this collaboration with a forward thinking, like-minded partner that shares our sustainability principles a real commitment to the circular economy”.

Gareth Banks, Senior Designer at Orangebox says: “Orangebox has long been committed to taking a circular economy approach to design and manufacturing our office furniture.

"Having been highly impressed by Premier Sustain’s remanufacturing capabilities, we carried out a series of successful trials that demonstrated the practical and economical viability of our vision for the G64.

"We are delighted to be launching the G64R and taking the next step in our closed loop approach to manufacturing.”

Orangebox and Premier Sustain launched the UK’s first truly circular office chair at a BIFM Sustainability Special Interest Group (SIG) event to celebrate World FK Day held at Orangebox’s innovative office furniture showroom in Clerkenwell, London.
