PTSG completes lightning protection system at heritage site observatory

29 June 2016

Premier Technical Services Group PLC (PTSG) has completed the installation of a new lightning protection system at a unique tourist attraction site in Bristol.

The Clifton Observatory is a converted mill set above the Avon Gorge and overlooking the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Downs.

The building is grade II listed and contains a camera obscura, which projects true images using a convex lens and sloping mirror.

The Bristol obscura is famous for its panoramic view of the surrounding area. PTSG operatives fitted a discreet lightning protection system to the top of the tower using specialist access equipment.

John Warren, Technical Director for PTSG Lightning Protection Services, said: “We have designed a system that is both compliant and satisfies the requirements of the client.

“The building is a unique site; however, we have previous experience of working on a number of heritage sites, such as Newark Castle, Hensol Castle in Wales and The Bonham Hotel in Edinburgh.

"We drew ideas from these past projects and managed to develop a solution that will provide safety and peace of mind to the owners of the building for many years to come.”

Beth Jones, from Clifton Observatory, said: “It was great working with PTSG. They were really efficient and provided a comprehensive solution for making the building safe in the event of a lightning strike. In the case of the observatory, it is really important that we work with suppliers who are sympathetic to the history of the building. We were delighted with the end result.”

PTSG delivers a range of niche specialist building services and has developed a reputation as one of the UK’s industry leaders.

Its electrical division provides fixed wire testing, PAT testing and steeplejack services amongst other solutions to a range of clients nationwide and overseas.
