First Scottish hospital receives Food for Life recognition

14 June 2016

Hairmyres Hospital of NHS Lanarkshire has become the first hospital in Scotland to receive the Soil Association's Food for Life Bronze Catering Mark award.

It was presented to ISS Healthcare in recognition of its improvements made within the site's Courtyard Restaurant.

Achievements include the serving of meals made from fresh ingredients and free from additives and trans fats, which are better for animal welfare, and are easily traceable.

The onsite team prepare and serve over 200 meals to staff, visitors and out patients each day.

To achieve the award, recipients must show they have changed menus through working with local suppliers and sourcing fresh produce.

The Courtyard Restaurant now offers a seasonal menu that changes every three months and uses fresh fruit and vegetables in all its meals.

Having increased the number of local suppliers used, this has seen items such as bread rolls and potatoes sourced from Magee's in Stirling.
