Good practice for solar car parks guide

18 March 2016

BRE National Solar Centre has published its Solar Carpark Guide to show how PV technologies can be successfully deployed with car park settings.

Director Jonny Williams described solar carports as "an excellent way of improving the car-parking experience, while also generating clean electricity".

He described the 17,000 UK car parks as providing a "great opportunity" to utilise solar PV, following falling costs and technical advances that have seen output performance increase.

BRE said the guide provides advice on how to select the best sites, tap into revenue streams and also develop effective business cases for investment in solar technology.

The guide also includes a number of design concepts and considerations.

It is also complemented with a financial model that can be downloaded from the BRE website.

Installation costs are expressed in both £/Wp and £/m2 plus revenue from income per car parking bay per annum.

The guide is also endorsed by Renewable Energy Association chief executive Dr Nina Skorupska CBE.
